Milan Nestarec - I Love the Smell of Napalm in the Morning

For all the intensity the name on the label conveys, upon opening this bottle, you are greeted with something noticeably friendlier. The first sip comes out lighter on tannins, while still packing a very-berry-filled punch of acidity. A punch that is softened by a cool, valley breeze, full of cassis and dried, aromatic herbs. But of course, give it a little time to open up and you have a Kool-Aid-man-smashing-through-your-wall kind of flavor right in your living room. Oh yeah!

Nestarec’s wines always show such vitality and strong expression so it’s no surprise when he aimed to make a glou-glou style red, this is what cate out. Hand-harvested whole bunches are fermented semi-carbonically in 5000L stainless steel tanks for 2 weeks. The juice is then bottled unfiltered, unfined and without any added sulfur for your drinking pleasure.⁣

Anna, André et Yann Durrmann - Riesling sur Schistes 2018⁣

Seasons change, colors shift, light becomes scarcer and 2020 gets seemingly wilder by the day. We needed a little comfort that came in the form of cheese fondue. And whoever says gooey Comté and melty Gruyère, must also be saying Riesling — and more specifically, Alsacian Riesling. While you’re at it, make that Durrmannian Alsacian Riesling. Confied lemon rind, smoky apricot and mouth-watering honeydew. It all comes together as perfectly as the leaves slowly fall to the ground. ⁣

Gönc - Harvest Moon 2018⁣

The 2018 Harvest Moon from @goncwinery is exactly what you want to be drinking this time of the year. And not only for the warm, soothing notes of steeped peaches, orange rind and caramel that will give you a big bear hug and tell you everything will be okay - but also because this time of year, all over the northern hemisphere, winemakers and their team of vineyard workers have begun picking grapes by the harvest moon. ⁣

Harvest season also means lots of big decisions are being made. Mainly, how much more time should you wait before picking the grapes for those extra weeks of ripening? When nightly frosts loom near, the risk of losing fruit grows higher. But the hard work and determination of the winemakers to keep the grapes safe (check out @domainedunival ‘s latest posts) is just one more reason why we cherish the bottles that make it to us.⁣

And to all the vendange soldiers out there working day and night, we dedicate this one to you. ⁣

The Pinot Gris was picked under the full moon back in 2017, then came 45 days of skin contact, explaining that deep orange color. The winemaker, Slovenia’s own Gönc winery is another great example of @dieu.du.vin ‘s impressive portfolio of one-of-a-kind wines. The winery dates back to 1936 where curent winemaker Peter’s grandfather planted the first vines, only to eventually give them up to work on another winery. After a long hiatus, Peter made his way back to the original grounds and restated the Gönc name with a minimal intervention approach.⁣

Fun fact from their website: Gönc is actually a name for a 136 L barrel that they produce in Hungary, from where the Gönc family hails. The 136 dots on each bottle of their wine are a tribute to the family’s long history in the region’s wine community.⁣

Olivier Lemasson - Les Vins Contes 'Gama Sutra' 2019⁣

We know what you're thinking. Bad lighting, drinking out of a plastic cup on top of a cooler in a Scarborough parking lot, does it really get any better than this? And to that we say nope, because this is exactly the kind of laid back, easy to drink wine that got us into this game in the first place. And even if it isn't always pretty, it’s almost always really, really good. Good like a thick slice of tart cherry pie, topped with a touch of cinnamon and served with a side of ice cream. It may not be a smack-in-your-face kind of explosion of flavor, but it‘s dang good. And we are dang happy to have grabbed a few off the shelves while it lasted.⁣

Olivier Lemasson was quoted when talking about his wines as saying (in french): "les vins les plus f****** buvables au monde!" What a legend. At least in our books he is. His stunning R16 is how we discovered him and we've been keeping a close eye ever since. After working years selling the stuff, he finally decided to make his own wine as a négociant in 2002 with Henry Villemade, who eventually left in 2006. Since then, he's started growing his own grapes for the beautifully labeled juice he puts out year after year.⁣

Les Pervenches + Elena - Chingon 2018⁣⁣

Hot dang, just look at this thing. Spitfire racer, blasting down the Interstate, making all the heads turn. The 2018 Chingon collaboration between @elenamontreal and @vignoblelespervenches got a fresh paint job this year, and it’s disappearing fast. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
With all its beauty, there were some things that left us just a little off-kilter about this one. Our bottle did have some volatile acidity on the nose, though it might be expected with Brutal (inspired) cuvées . However, given more time to breathe, we're hopeful it would have dissipated (big thirsty groups can be unfair to certain bottles). Underneath it though, lay a beautiful splash of smooth citrus, white truffle and San Benedetto peach iced tea with enough nostalgic flair to bring us back to a pre-Covid movie theatre in the heat of summer. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And hey, different bottles hold different secrets within. Unpredictability is kind of the name of the game with all things beautifully natural. And for that reason, natural winemaking in Quebec takes real courage. It is a thing of discovery, of experimentation. It can be wildly unexpected most of the time. But it is just that -- the thrill of each idiosyncratic bottle -- which keeps us coming back for more, time after jaw-dropping time. ⁣⁣

Enderle & Moll - Müller-Thurgau Pur 2018

Sometimes it’s ok the start with desert.⁣
Especially when it’s somewhere between a lemon meringue pie and a pear sorbet but with less sweetness and more bite. A liquid treat that refreshes, with notes of tannic apricot tea and lemongrass spritz. It won’t care when you give it a taste... and maybe you shouldn’t either. Like, right now would be good. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯⁣

Enderle & Moll has remained one of our favourite producers since our first sip of their Liaison Pinot Noir Rosé back in 2018. In their homeland of Germany, many consider them to be the best Pinot Noir producers in the country - made from some of the oldest vines there, too. And the wines really are that good. Sven Enderle and Florian Moll, the duo behind the grape, have been making wine since 2007. They do little to their wines beyond foot-stomping grapes and de-stemming some of the clusters. Wines are unfined, unfiltered and undeniably great.⁣

Rigour and Whimsy - Hyperdrive + Gamay Noir 2019⁣

Yep, it's been a little while since we posted one of these. Truth is, it's been weird, for obvious reasons, and for everyone. Something about these times just doesn't scream: "Let's have fun and share it with the world!" But, you know, we're getting over it slowly, as we're sure a lot of you are, too.⁣
 ⁣
And it does help when Rigour and Whimsy sends you two of their newest cuvées: the 2019 Gamay Noir and the new Hyperdrive(previously Flux Capacitor). Something about these bottles just brought us back to the early days of discovering natural wine. ⁣
 ⁣
The white was downright beautiful. The closest thing to what we imagine a white cherry-gusher fruit explosion in your mouth would feel like. Coupled with something akin to a fresh and fruity breeze on a warm, summer’s evening and you have the ideal movie-in-the-park juice.⁣
 ⁣
The red was like gnawing on an actual grape vine while being serenaded by a life size version of a CareBear. Fresh, fun and hydrating - it's what 2020 needs more of.⁣
 ⁣
To dock in just one point, the red did taste a little green and young with just a tiny bit of structure missing. But if you're looking for chillable summer wines, you are definitely knocking on the right door.⁣

Owned by husband and wife team Costa & Jody Gavaris, Rigour and Whimsy are now on their 5th vintage. They work the soil naturally and the wines (naturally) follow. In their words:⁣
 ⁣
"The name Rigour & Whimsy is an homage to their shared commitment to seeking balance in themselves, in their relationships, and in the natural world. Like yin and yang, Rigour and Whimsy are seemingly contrary attitudes that are actually complementary and interdependent. Both are necessary to find harmony."⁣

Plus, Costa had an incredible beard all the world should see 👌⁣
Cheers to you guys 🥤⁣

Cidres Polisson 2019

1. Rhubarbe ⁣
Notre coup de cœur est la Rhubarbe. On y retrouve de la pomme Empire à laquelle on ajoute 20 boîtes de rhubarbe (« D’automne! », Hugo precise).

Grape Republic - Bianco 2018⁣⁣

We celebrated a father’s birthday this weekend. With our small group sitting in the backyard at a distance, we shared this bottle of Grape Republic’s Bianco 2018 over music and good food. It almost felt like the world had gone back to normal for a minute. ⁣⁣

This is refreshing and really daytime drinking wine. “⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The young Grape Republic winery (est. 2017) wowed us at last years @rawwineworld festival here in Montreal. And every subsequent bottle of theirs after that left the same impression. Full of life and flavors rarely seen by us before. And all coming from a country not widely know for wine, let along natural wine. Well worth seeking them out!⁣⁣

Fruktstereo - Bellondie 2018⁣

Just as the spring sun is starting to peek its nose out, we popped out this bright beauty. Crisp, tart and goes down like water, there is hardly anything like it out there. Every cider we’ve had from the guys are uniquely stellar. They are known for their refreshing, energetic and fruit-forward beverages (we say beverages since they make things like vegetable pet nats as well, which are amazing), and this one may just be one of the best.⁣

La Villana - Vino Bianco 2018⁣

Quarantine is so much more bearable with burgers and wine (gracieuseté de @bar_loic ). Especially when you’re drinking what is essentially a savory summer barbecue, bottled. Smoky, grilled pineapple with charred lemons and rosemary... Is it the season yet? Are we even allowed to go outside? (No! So don’t get any ideas). So many questions, so much free time to think about them. Guess we’ll just sit here, ponder about it, and open more wine. ⁣

A little research will tell you that La Villana is a derogatory term shepherds use for local farmers. And the labels are just as fun (s/o @jamisonodone )as the wine inside the bottle. Grapes are crushed by foot and direct-pressed. Athénaïs de Béru - Bourgogne 2017 Rosé

What. A. Week. ⁣
Just a week ago, Athénaïs de Béru’s 2018 Pinot Gris rosé had us peacefully sipping on notes of hibiscus and elderflower, rolling through clouds of grapefruit mist and fresh morning dew. And then bam! One time change, one full moon, one Friday the 13th... a global pandemic later, here we are.⁣

It’s a lot. Collectively, it definitely feels like too much. But we know what we need to do now. Be smart, be safe, love each other (from a ~distance~) and wash your dang hands. ⁣

Now using biodynamic practices make the Béru dream work and we, for some, are very grateful. Harvested by hand, fermented in old oak with one month of macération on skins. The Pinot Gris spend 12 months in amphora with no fining, no filtration, no SO2 and all love.⁣

A wild Californian field blend that has as much brawn as it does finesse. The big flavors, the soft finish, it’s hard to describe. And even though the image of a buffalo on a tricycle may seem like a bit of a reach, it’s what we had going in our heads and you may probably agree after the first few sips.⁣

It almost goes without saying then, that grapes are hand harvested from low yielding vines. Ferments are done with natural yeast, wines are not stabilised, filtered or fined.
